DESCRIPTION:The first musical in the Axelrod’s Sondheim Centennial Project is this Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece\, regarded as one of the most acclaimed musicals of all time. The show was inspired by Georges Seurat’s pointillist painting\, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. The 1984 Broadway production\, starring Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin\, was nominated for an astounding 10 Tony Awards\, including Best Musical.\nAxelrod’s Sondheim Centennial Project\, curated by Artistic Director Andrew DePrisco\, will present one Sondheim musical each year until Stephen Sondheim’s 100th birthday anniversary in 2030\, as well as concerts and showcases of living composers\, to honor the master’s commitment to new voices and the future of musical theater.

DESCRIPTION:Glen Hansard \nGlen Hansard is the lead singer and a founding member of Irish rock band The Frames. He is one half of folk duo The Swell Season\, along with Czech pianist and vocalist Markéta Irglová. Together\, they share an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly\,” from the film Once\, in which they both starred. He has released five solo albums\, including the GRAMMY-nominated Didn’t He Ramble (2015)\, as well as a number of EPs. A tour of Europe in support of his new album is planned for the autumn.

While adept at making clinical diagnoses\, intimate human interactions confound and bewilder him\, until he encounters Anu\, a young woman working in the Patient Simulation program (SP). The play follows their sessions over several years as it moves toward a profound and poignant climax\, and poses the question – can empathy and compassion ever be taught?
