SUMMARY:BREAD AND ROSES FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:The idea of a female-centric film festival was born the moment that Roe v. Wade was overturned\, as it become even more glaringly obvious simply how much female voices still need protection\, support\, and celebration. Since its inception\, the world of cinema has long been a male dominated space\, and while some movement forward has been made\, progress towards alleviating gender inequities behind the screen has been slow and uneven\, at best. \nEnter\, Bread and Roses\, a term which dates back to the early 1900s and inspired by a speech from suffragist\, Helen Todd. The term went on to become synonymous with the 1912 Lawrence\, Massachusetts textile workers strike – a strike that was led by mostly migrant women through a brutally cold winter (and sadly\, not one without unnecessary bloodshed). \nAt a foundational level\, bread and roses refers to the desire that women deserve both fair wages and dignified conditions. In turn\, “Bread for all\, and Roses too!” (and the many variations thereof) became a common slogan among women’s fights for equal rights across the United States. BRFF’s main mission is to support\, elevate\, and celebrate the unique and diverse voices of female filmmakers from around the world. \nWith an all-female leadership team\, each of us is deeply dedicated and passionate about women’s rights – on and off screen. We are incredibly proud to run a small\, and mighty female-centric film space with hopes of bettering the present (and future) for all women in film\, from their childhood dreams to their professional goals. \nJoin us! We are grateful for your support\, in whichever way works best for you.

SUMMARY:DANIEL DONATO’S COSMIC COUNTRY
DESCRIPTION:There are a lot of musical influences and sources that Daniel Donato has drawn on during his career and that inform his latest album\, Reflector\, his first all-original album. But within those\, Donato has carved out a unique and individualized spot for himself\, one that speaks to the deep American music heritage that inspires him — and that he’s pushing towards the future with inspired\, intentional vigor. \nHe calls it Cosmic Country\, a moniker that’s both self-descriptive and a statement of purpose. It’s an organic rock band aesthetic with plenty of roadhouse twang; a showcase for Donato’s instrumental virtuosity and facility for melodically infectious songcraft. Bridging Nashville and the Great West\, Kentucky and mid-60s northern California\, tie-dye and plaid\, it’s a world of his own\, and a wide world of musical adventure at that. \nWhile growing up in Nashville his father\, who turned his young son on to music of all genres\, suggested the fledgling and industriously minded (even at just 14) artist start busking in Nashville’s lower Broadway area and outside concerts\, for eight hours at a time on the weekends. One night\, the two happened by Robert’s Western World where legendary honky-tonk local mainstay the Don Kelly Band were performing. “Their songbook was that of my main influences still to this day — Merle Haggard\, Willie Nelson\, Waylon Jennings\, Bob Wills\, Marty Robbins\, Bill Monroe\, traditional bluegrass music\, Hank Williams Sr. — old-timey music with real stories and emotions that everybody has. It just hooked me right away.” Donato eventually became a member of the band\, playing four hours a night at Robert’s (464 shows in total). \nAnother piece of the puzzle came through later in Donato’s teenage years — the Grateful Dead\, thanks to a high school American History teacher who gave him a pile of bootleg recordings when he was 18. “When I discovered Jerry Garcia\, there’s really never been anyone who writes like that\,” says Donato. “From there I went on to discover Bob Dylan and all the great writers and made me want to make that part of what I did as well.” \nThe whole package of player\, singer\, writer and band leader was in place. Two albums in\, Daniel Donato and Cosmic Country\, featuring Nathan Aronowitz (keyboards/guitars/vocals)\, Will McGee (bass/vocals) and Will Clark (drums\, percussion/vocals) are selling out venues throughout the country and bringing their brand of Cosmic Country to an ever growing\, passionate fanbase. \nDoor 7:00 PM\nShow 8:00 PM \nTickets: $25 advance (plus applicable service charges)\, $30 at the door

SUMMARY:“Grace -N- Grit "~ Michael Longo & Friends Group Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“Grace -N- Grit” Exhibition Honors the Legacy of Michael Longo: Artist & Friend \nIn a tribute to one of its most cherished family members\, Parlor Gallery presents “Grace -N- Grit\,” an exhibition celebrating the extraordinary life and work of Michael Longo.\nOpening Saturday\, October 26th\, from 6-10 PM\, this intimate showcase brings together Longo’s previously unseen works alongside pieces by 18 artists who shared his creative journey\, perspective and friendship. \nMichael Longo\, who passed away in April 2024\, known for his masterful paintings as much as his magnetic personality at Bond Street Bar\, Longo lived his life as an artwork in itself – full of beautiful contradictions. “He would tuck a small\, delicate flower behind his ear while bartending\, and simultaneously curse and possibly throw someone out for their bad behavior. These contradictions were endless and wonderful\, teaching us to accept all sides of ourselves.” -Jill Ricci (his partner in love and life)\nMichael embodied grace in its truest forms – both as a presence that honored every space he entered and as an expression of elegant\, courteous goodwill. Paired with his remarkable grit – that unwavering courage and strength of character – these qualities defined him\, shining brightest even during his illness.\nHe had many passions aside from visual art\, and he imbued all of them with the same attention\, care and adoration. Life as Art. Even during his battle with Stage 4 cancer\, Longo’s creative spirit never dimmed. When traditional oil paints became too toxic\, he adapted\, turning to gouache and watercolor. When neuropathy made his hands nearly unusable\, he continued creating in whatever way he could. \n“Michael’s development as an artist and person was inspiring. He spent every available moment drawing\, painting\, working on his cars and trucks\, cooking and learning. He kept some of these passions close to his heart\, but when he shared them\, they never failed to impress. Whichever version of Michael you knew or talents he shared with you\, he somehow made you feel important for it. Full of compassion\, creativity\, emotion\, humor\, elegance and vitriol\, he focused it into his body of work that is over-whelming\, awe-inspiring and beautiful.” ~ Pat James Longo \n“Mike was a true creative to his core\,” says Parlor Gallery’s Jenn Hampton. “Even though he has physically left us\, his imprint on Asbury Park and our community will remain. This is the true gift of a Creative: that through their Art and actions\, they become immortal.” \nFeatured artists joining this special exhibition include:\nPat James Longo\nMeghan McAleavy\nSara Stadtmiller\nMatt Crabe\nNeil O’Brien\nPorkchop\nRobert Leecock\nJennifer DiZelfalo\nPuddin Aylward\nRob Santello\nRobert Ryan\nErica Vermilyea\nKristen Vermilyea\nTim Cronin\nSandy Gaestel\nMike Shine\nJason Stumpf\nGary Mellon \n“Grit -N- Grace” opens Saturday\, October 26th. The reception and celebration is from 6-10pm and free and open to the public. \nParlor Gallery is located at 717 Cookman Avenue\, (on the Arts Bloc) Asbury Park\, NJ. \nFor inquiries about the exhibition or artwork and to be added to the Collector Preview\, please contact jill@parlor-gallery.com or juicyjenn@parlor-gallery.com.

SUMMARY:42nd Annual Candlelight Concert and Reception
DESCRIPTION:All Saints’ Memorial Church\, “The Stone Church”\, will host its 42nd Annual Candlelight Concert and Reception on Sunday\, October 27 at 4:00 pm at 202 Navesink Avenue\, Atlantic Highlands. This year’s event will feature Eric Wyrick\, violinist and concertmaster of the New Jersey Symphony; Jonathan Spitz\, celloist\, also with the New Jersey Symphony; and piano soloist and chamber musician Yun Kyung Rachel Choo. The evening’s program will include selections from J.S. Bach\, Debussy\, Mendelsshon and Amy Beach. The church’s historic stone structure\, beautiful stained-glass windows\, and excellent acoustics provide a beautiful setting for the event’s traditional classical program\, making it a popular event during the fall season.\nA reception will follow in the church’s parish house. Tickets are $45 per person and a variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. Reservations can be made online at http://bit.ly/3z1KP46 or call 732-291-0214 for more information.\nEarly in the years of the Civil War\, the Milnor and Stephens families provided the land and paid for the building of All Saints’ Memorial Church in Navesink\, then called Riceville. They chose the architectural firm of Richard Upjohn. Upjohn was well known for his English Gothic Revival church designs and was the architect of Trinity Church\, Wall Street. The church building was consecrated in 1864 and was followed by the construction of the parish house\, barn and carriage sheds\, all of which stand today. All Saints’ Memorial Church was officially designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1988 and is considered a prime example of 19th century ecclesiastical design.
