SUMMARY:The Melvins
DESCRIPTION:The Melvins\nWe Are The Asteroid \nThe Melvins are one of modern music’s most influential bands. Having formed in 1983 Montesano\, Washington\, the group founded by singer/guitar player Buzz Osborne (with stalwart drummer Dale Crover joining the following year)\, has been credited with merging the worlds of punk rock and heavy music\, forming a new subgenre all its own. Over the band’s nearly 40-year history\, they’ve released over 30 original albums\, numerous live full-lengths and far too many to count singles and rarities. Most recently they released the 36-track acoustic collection Five Legged Dog\, featuring reinterpretations of some of their heaviest songs as well as covers from their favorite artists. In the course of their discography\, they’ve partnered with Jello Biafra\, Mudhoney\, and Fantômas for individual releases and toured the world many times over. In fact\, the band had the misfortune to be in both Christchurch and Tokyo for their 2011 earthquakes. In 2012\, the Melvins completed the “51 States in 51 Days” (50 states +DC) tour\, which was chronicled in the film “Across The USA in 51 Days.” The current incarnation of the band is Osborne\, Crover\, and Steven McDonald (Redd Kross/OFF!). Previous line-ups include a pairing of Osborne and Crover with Big Business band members Jared Warren and Coady Willis\, a four-piece featuring the current trio plus Butthole Surfers’ Jeff Pinkus\, as well as Melvins Lite\, which partners Osborne and Crover with Mr. Bungle’s Trevor Dunn. Sometimes\, if you’re extra lucky\, one version of the Melvins will open for the Melvins.

DESCRIPTION:CATE LE BON \nPompeii\, Cate Le Bon’s sixth full-length studio album and the follow up to 2019’s Mercury-nominated Reward\, bears a storied title summoning apocalypse\, but the metaphor eclipses any “dissection of immediacy\,” says Le Bon. Not to downplay her nod to disorientation induced by double catastrophe — global pandemic plus climate emergency’s colliding eco-traumas resonate all too eerily. “What would be your last gesture?” she asks. But just as Vesuvius remains active\, Pompeii reaches past the current crises to tap into what Le Bon calls “an economy of time warp” where life roils\, bubbles\, wrinkles\, melts\, hardens\, and reconfigures unpredictably\, like lava—or sound\, rather. Like she says in the opener\, “Dirt on the Bed\,” Sound doesn’t go away / In habitual silence / It reinvents the surface / Of everything you touch. \nPompeii is sonically minimal in parts\, and its lyrics jog between self-reflection and direct address. Vulnerability\, although “obscured\,” challenges Le Bon’s tendencies towards irony. Written primarily on bass and composed entirely alone in an “uninterrupted vacuum\,” Le Bon plays every instrument (except drums and saxophones) and recorded the album largely by herself with long-term collaborator and co-producer Samur Khouja in Cardiff\, Wales. Enforced time and space pushed boundaries\, leading to an even more extreme version of Le Bon’s studio process – as exits were sealed\, she granted herself “permission to annihilate identity.” “Assumptions were destroyed\, and nothing was rejected” as her punk assessments of existence emerged.

One of the last recordings by the late and legendary producer Steve Albini\, the record captures the Texas foursome live in the studio bottling their raw\, Southern-tinged grunge with unfiltered immediacy. \nFormed in Fort Worth in 1989\, Toadies marry the band’s love for the Pixies and Talking Heads to the old-school country\, ZZ Top\, and classic rock they all grew up on. It’s a sound intoxicating but uneasy\, cathartic yet always searching. Frontman Vaden Todd Lewis channels years of self-reflection into The Charmer\, a concept born from pandemic isolation and a reckoning with self-doubt. \nReleased via Austin’s pioneering Spaceflight Records (The Sword\, Die Spitz\, Heartless Bastards)\, the world’s first nonprofit label\, The Charmer embodies true creative freedom: made on their own terms\, with Steve Albini their dream producer. The Charmer is the most defiantly “Toadies” Toadies album yet. \nLocal H is known for their blistering live shows and for pioneering the two-man band set-up — frontman Scott Lucas covers both guitar and bass through an extra pick up in his guitar and drummer Ryan Harding pounds out the rest of the sound. While they have earned praise in the past for their catalog of clever concept albums\, Local H have forgone a singular theme on their most recent album — Hey\, Killer (out April 2015 on G&P Records) — turning out a non-stop blast of straight-up\, hooky\, guitar-heavy rock songs — each one catchier than the last. The band’s discography includes seven other studio albums\, a live album\, and a bunch of EPs and “Straight Outta Zion\,” a Blu-ray concert video (release date 8/12/16). \nLocal H’s widely praised 1998 concept album Pack Up the Cats earned a spot in SPIN magazine’s top 20 albums of that year. The band was named “Chicagoans of the Year” by the Chicago Tribune for their 2008 break-up album\, 12 Angry Months\, more than a decade after their breakthrough hit “Bound for the Floor” ruled the Modern Rock charts.
