SUMMARY:Upcoming Author Event: American Graphic by JoAnne McFarland at Asbury Book Cooperative
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to welcome JoAnne McFarland to Asbury Book Cooperative! She will be presenting her newest title AMERICAN GRAPHIC in conversation with local author and poet\, Mychal Mills! Tickets are available through the Eventbrite on our website. All of our author events are open to the public but space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot!\n—\nWith candor and insight\, American Graphic confronts personal and cultural pasts. Juxtaposing historical documents—recipes from the first cookbook published by a Black woman in the States\, reward posters for people fleeing enslavement—with intimate moments from the present\, the book’s magic is to bend time so we see that the past’s rivers flow through us into the future. Spare yet lyrical in its language\, American Graphic is a concentrate of feeling and vision. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \nJoAnne McFarland is a multidisciplinary artist\, writer\, and curator. She is the Artistic Director of Artpoetica Project Space in Gowanus\, Brooklyn\, which exhibits works that focus on the intersection of language and visual representation. Her poetry collections include A Domestic Lookbook and Pullman\, both recently published by Grid Books\, Identifying the Body and the digital album Tracks of My Tears\, both published by the Word Works\, and Acid Rain\, published by Willow Books. JoAnne has artwork in the permanent collections of the Cooper/Hewitt Smithsonian\, the Library of Congress\, the Columbus Museum of Art\, and the Department of State\, among many others. She has had fellowships at the BARD Graduate Center Library\, KALA Art Institute\, the National Arts Club\, Cave Canem\, Van Alen Institute\, and the Painting Center. JoAnne’s artwork is represented by Accola Griefen Fine Art. www.joannemcfarland.com \nBOOK REVIEWS: \nIn the slaughterhouse of the nation\, the history\, the language\, JoAnne McFarland writes: “The feather inside me won’t be quiet.” And of the winter: “It could change in a heartbeat\, it will change as our hearts are beating.” American Graphic is a field of marks and feelings quite impossible to describe. Minimalist yet dense\, a thicket of sparse reckoning out of which beauty is pulled to the surface with muscle and voice\, color and hand. Dynamic and exacting\, McFarland’s is a brilliant\, singular vision. American Graphic is an astonishing work. —aracelis girmay \nJoAnne McFarland’s American Graphic serves us a mesmerizing potion of personal history peppered with documentation of national cruelty and lifted with homage to Black ingenuity and resilience. Festooned with Adinkra signposts and latticed threadwork\, McFarland masterfully weaves a call-and-response seam between past and present. Ingredients provided here are ambitious craft\, persistent attention to memory\, a sensual\, fetter-free eros\, and a reader willing to emancipate the way they understand poetry. \n—Tyehimba Jess \nABOUT THE MEDIATIOR: \nMychal Mills is a poet\, self-published author and transformational leader based in New Jersey. From a young age\, Mychal has been dedicated to serving and building his community\, a passion that has continued throughout his life. In 2014\, he co-founded Konscious Youth Development & Service (KYDS)\, a nonprofit organization that has been transforming the lives of youth\, schools\, and communities throughout New Jersey. KYDS focuses on facilitating mindfulness\, social-emotional learning\, trauma-healing\, restorative practices\, and resilience building. Under Mychal’s leadership\, KYDS has partnered with over 120 schools in New Jersey\, positively impacting 15\,000 youth\, 7\,000 educators\, and thousands of community members.

SUMMARY:The Cardboard Show: Perennial Plague
DESCRIPTION:The Cardboard Show: Perennial Plague\nThe Fourth Annual Cardboard Show\nSite-specific installation by Artists; Porkchop & Bradley Hoffer\nThe Art Spot is pleased to present Perennial Plague\, the fourth installment of the annual Cardboard Show by Porkchop and Bradley Hoffer — the artists behind Asbury Park’s beloved handmade Cardboard Giving Tree and many of the murals found throughout the city.\nIn this immersive installation\, the duo transforms corrugated cardboard into illuminated botanical forms that feel both familiar and otherworldly. Radiating from walls and ceiling\, the sculptures suggest oversized blossoms\, spores\, or quiet mutations. Light filters through layered cardboard\, casting shifting shadows that animate the space and give the work a sense of growth and movement.\nPerennial Plague considers what might flourish if human presence receded — how flora and fauna could slowly reclaim built environments. The title hints at recurrence rather than catastrophe: cycles of growth that persist\, spread\, and return. What we often frame as “invasive” or threatening may simply be nature doing what it has always done — adapting\, expanding\, and surviving. The exhibition continues the dystopian thread explored in last year’s show\, Anti-AI: A Cardboard Odyssey.\nUsing one of the most ordinary and disposable materials\, Porkchop and Hoffer once again elevate cardboard into something immersive and architectural. Corrugation becomes structure\, texture\, and light filter; the temporary becomes enduring. As with their celebrated Cardboard Giving Tree\, the artists demonstrate how modest materials can transform a space — and how beauty can emerge from what we typically overlook.\nIn Perennial Plague\, bloom and blight coexist. The work spreads across the gallery\, quietly suggesting that nature does not disappear — it waits.

SUMMARY:"Lightning in a Bottle: A Love Letter to Asbury Lanes" Book Signing & Events
DESCRIPTION:“Lightning in a Bottle: A Love Letter to Asbury Lanes” is more than a photobook — it is a testament to one of Asbury Park’s most iconic eras. For over a decade\, photographer Mike McLaughlin served as the unofficial “keeper of the Asbury Lanes’ memories\,” instinctively documenting the music\, the misfits\, the staff\, the artists\, and the rare magic that lived inside the Lanes’ walls. His camera became an extension of him\, allowing him to preserve a community and a creative universe that no longer exists. Through more than 100\,000 images captured over 11 years\, McLaughlin offers a visual archive of a beloved cultural landmark — a collective fever dream shared by those who called the Lanes home.\nThe spirit of The Lanes comes to life the weekend of December 19-20th! Gallery openings\, gatherings\, and the triumphant return of the legendary Guilty Pleasures Dance Party (IYKYK) will mark the release of this 400-page photographic love letter\, hosted by Mt Crushmore Records\, Parlor Gallery\, and Mike McLaughlin. \nSATURDAY\, DECEMBER 20 Book Signing & Artist Talk12:00 PM – 2:00 PM\nMeet the artist\, purchase signed copies of the book and prints from the book. SUMMARY:Krampus Asbury Park Festival Street Fair 🧌👹
DESCRIPTION:Join us for today’s Krampus Asbury Park Events! \nKrampus Asbury Park stands out because it doesn’t just imitate European traditions — it adapts them. The Krampus who walks these streets is both ancient and unmistakably local. He belongs to a city that loves its legends\, whether they come from the Alps or the Jersey Shore. In Asbury Park\, Krampus isn’t simply a punisher of the naughty; he’s a celebration of the weird\, the creative\, and the joyful defiance that defines the town. \nToday\, Krampus Asbury Park continues each December as a weekend of folklore\, music\, art\, and community. It’s part of Asbury’s ongoing story — one that finds beauty in the dark\, warmth in the cold\, and laughter in the shadows.

SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH presentation and signing with Laura Bagwell at the Asbury Book Cooperative
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very interesting BOOK LAUNCH with Katherine J. Parkin in conversation with ABC’s Feminist Book Club leader\, Laura Bagwell presenting THE ABORTION MARKET: Buying and Selling Access in the Era Before Roe! \nSaturday\, September 20th at 5pm.\nThe $40 ticket option includes an RSVP to the event and a BOOK!\nThe $5 General Admission ticket includes an RSVP and you will recieve a $5 coupon to use at the time of the event! \nAbout the Book:\nThe abortion market was a powerful economic force in American life. Before legalization lowered the cost\, one million women each year collectively paid upward of $750 million for abortions. In this illuminating book\, Katherine J. Parkin reveals the strength of a massive consumer market that involved loans\, advertising\, and travel\, as well as the costs associated with the procedure itself. Parkin shows how white\, middle- and upper-class women sought out abortions and paid exorbitantly for them and how male entrepreneurs emerged to capitalize on the booming market and profit from the incredible demand. While we may have imagined that securing an abortion was best understood as a hidden\, woman-only experience\, The Abortion Market reveals the extent to which businesses and businessmen openly selling abortion access shaped the experience of buying abortions for millions of women. \nAbout the Author:\nKatherine J. Parkin is Professor of History at Monmouth University. She is\nauthor of Women at the Wheel: A Century of Buying\, Driving\, and Fixing Cars and Food Is Love: Advertising and Gender Roles in Modern America\, both available from the University of Pennsylvania Press.
