The Civil Rights Movement has its genesis in 1879 Fair Haven.
The Fair Haven Freemen [FHF] desired to attend Fair Haven's
segregated white only public schools, however the Shrewsbury Township
Board of Education prohibited non-whites from attending its public schools.
    .
The FHF filed a petition with the NJ Supreme Court in 1881, requesting the integration of all public schools in New Jersey. The 1881 Supreme Court ruling is known as the "Fair Haven Rule" -- which prohibits segregation of all public schools in New Jersey for students ages 5 to 18.

The 1881 Fair Haven Ruling was the legal precedent for the
U.S. Supreme Court's 1954 Brown v. Board Of Education ruling.
